Plant Operator III Trainee

$26.86 - $37.52 DOQ

Shift Differential: Up to 12%

The Position:

The Plant Operator III Trainee is an entry-level or continuing professional advancement position, depending on qualifications. Incumbents learn to assist and/or independently perform basic plant operator duties, and then advance to the technical specialist wastewater plant operator level.

 

The PO III Trainee must obtain a State Water Resources Control Board (SCWRB) Grade III Wastewater Treatment Plant Operator's license within 18 months and achieve proficiency and advance to Plant Operator III within 24 months. The PO III has advanced technical skills, knowledge, and certification. The PO III is the designated-operator-in-charge for a specific work period, which includes ensuring the turnover of information between shifts.

 

There is one position currently open. An employment list is being established from which we expect to fill future vacancies.

Requirements:

•  Must pass the SWRCB Grade III Wastewater Treatment Plant Operator test within 18 months , obtain certification and demonstrate the competencies of Plant Operator III within 24 months as a condition of continued employment.

•  To qualify for the Grade III test, a candidate must have

  1. An AA degree or 60 college semester units including 15 semester units of basic science courses and two years* performing the duties of operator; OR
  2. High school graduate or equivalent and 16 educational points and four years* performing operator duties; OR
  3. Three years* experience as a Grade II Operator.

 

* 6 semester units or 16 educational points directly related to wastewater treatment may be substituted for one year of experience.

 

•  Learn to and perform the following:

(1) Accurately observe and record operating conditions, take necessary actions, and make process control decisions; (2) read and interpret a variety of meters, gauges and charts; (3) follow laboratory sampling and testing procedures; and (4) make mathematical calculations related to the operation of a wastewater treatment plant.

 

•  Have knowledge of elementary mechanical, electrical, and hydraulic principles. Perform rou­tine maintenance and cleaning of machinery, structures, equipment and piping.

 

•  Work safely in accordance with federal, state and local regulations and District policies and actively participate in the team and District safety programs.

 

•  Follow oral and written instructions; co mm unicate work-related information in writing.

 

•  Communicate effectively, listen, work collaboratively, be adaptable to changing work needs, and demonstrate leadership abilities.

 

•  Use a personal computer and learn a variety of computer programs.

 

•  Work shifts, up to twelve hours long, and weekends, holidays, and overtime as needed. Work outdoors in a variety of weather conditions.

 

•  Physical characteristics to perform the work, including sufficient strength to lift up to 50 pounds and sufficient stamina to walk several miles per shift and climb stairs. May be required to be clean-shaven to wear respiratory protection equipment.

Other Requirements:

Candidates must meet the on-call requirements of the District, including the ability to arrive on-site within 2 hours when called, and to remain within a 120-mile radius of the plant while on-call to aid compliance with the response time requirement.

 

Employees in this classification are covered under the provisions of the District's Memorandum of Understanding with SEIU Local 1021 and are required to either join the Union or pay a monthly service fee.

•  Finalists will be interviewed by a hiring panel, scheduled for October 15.

•  The candidate selected must also pass a driving insurability and criminal background checks and a medical examination by a District physician.
